Communications & Non-profit professional
I believe every person has the power to create positive change
who I am
I am a qualified communications professional with over four years of experience in strategic communications, copywriting, and website design, primarily focused on the nonprofit sector. I am a board advisor and co-founder of a nationwide non-profit called She Connects which supports young women through mentorship. I am also the founder of a social enterprise called Zenful Yoga which sells sustainable cork yoga mats. Through my work and volunteer efforts, I am dedicated to using my time in this world to leave it better than I came into it.
what I do
I've done a bit of everything! I love learning new things and diving head first into challenging projects. I was the Board Chair for the non-profit I co-founded, She Connects, and sat on the Board of Directors for Oikocredit Canada. I also founded a social enterprise business called Zenful Yoga, and I do freelance web design and communications advising work. I have recent experience over the last 4.5 years in which I worked in the non-profit world of healthcare on communications projects supporting family doctors in B.C.
what I seek
My goal has always been to work in capacities that allow me to make positive changes. I want to work for an organization that I love, that has the same values as me, that challenges me, leverages my skills, allows me to learn and grow, and fosters a positive and healthy work environment.
More than anything I hope to lend my passion and skills to an organization that strives to do good work for society. I am dedicated, hardworking, and always learning, and I look forward to using the skills I have built in the marketing & communications field.

Socially responsible, ready to inspire
Article quote: "Emily Haugen, a recent Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) alumna, is making a positive impact as a leader within the non-profit industry. Equipped with an applied education built on work experience, Haugen became motivated to co-found a non-profit society while attending KPU. Her initiative known as She Connects is a sustainable non-profit that provides mentorship to young women through an online-based platform that fosters relationships by learning through the experiences of others, while supporting one another to reach their own personal goals."
She Connects: mentoring and empowering young women and gender-diverse folks
Article quote: "Getting through high school can be enough of a challenge in itself, but at the same time, moving from high school to post-secondary or the workforce is also a difficult adjustment.
"I think that creating those connections between people in high school and people who have graduated, it's so important for when you want to go and enter that post-high-school world, because sometimes you don't realize that you're not prepared for it until you're launched into it. And then you're there, and you're like 'What do I do now?'" says Emily Haugen, Co-Founder of She Connects & student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University."
She Connects mentorship program searches for mentees in Surrey and region
Article quote: "She Connects provides 'a safe space for young girls and women, and will allow them to speak to a mentor directly about anything they might need guidance on,' the co-founders emphasize. 'Our mentors support mentees with the appropriate resources and tools for success and resiliency. With this mentorship program, we strive to lift women and empower them to be the driving force in their own lives.'"
Physician on a Mission Campaign
In my role as a Program Coordinator working in healthcare, I applied for a $25,000 grant to develop and execute a communications campaign led by local Family Doctors to address vaccine hesitancy. Multiple organizations were awarded this amount, and at the conclusion of the campaign we shared our impact presentation with the Public Health Agency of Canada and we won the grand prize of $100,000 to continue our work advancing public health priorities within our region via a second larger-scale campaign.
Family physicians campaign for vaccine awareness
"Haugen says one of the main reasons physicians were chosen to make the videos is because people seek them for health advice. Since many people are hesitant about the vaccine, an educational video from a physician would be the best way to learn about it."

KPU student wins scholarship to study globally
Article quote: "Once I graduate with my BBA I would like to continue to work in the non-profit sector," adds Haugen. "I think it is a unique experience to get the opportunity to use a marketing degree for a good cause, and as a feminist and activist, I would like to work in a field such as that."
In lead up to Women Deliver 2019, Government of Canada announces innovative cross-sector partnerships to advance gender equality
I attended Women Deliver as a member of the CanWaCH Canadian Mobilization Bursary and was asked on behalf of the Canadian Council of Young Feminists to speak at an intergenerational dialogue event alongside Canadian Senators and Members of Parliament discussing gender equity and allyship.
